Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

"Yoda looks like a wonton and talks like a fortune cookie." - Pauline Kael

Rating: 10/10
Runtime 124 minutes

"The Empire Strikes Back" is widely regarded as the best of the original trilogy, with its expertly paced story gradually heightening a sense of dread while never sacrificing its brilliant sense of humor. The film boasts impressive pacing, unforgettable scenes, fantastic character development, engaging dialogue, and an unmatched musical score. If you ever have the opportunity to experience this film accompanied by a live symphony, it's an opportunity that simply should not be missed.

This sequel contributes significantly to the Star Wars universe, introducing iconic characters such as Yoda, Lando, Boba Fett, and the bounty hunters, and featuring memorable elements such as the AT-ATs, the Super Star Destroyer, the "Imperial March," and Cloud City. Yoda's revelation of the full mythos of the Force culminates in arguably the best lightsaber duel in the entire saga.

Furthermore, the film bravely challenges the premise that "the good guys always win". It depicts the reality of the underdogs battling against a powerful, far-reaching government. Against the formidable military strength of the empire, it's not as simple as striking at one critical point to save the day and everyone returns home to their families.

In film schools, "The Empire Strikes Back" is often cited as the quintessential example of "how to build a sequel". In a previous review of "Star Wars: A New Hope," we discussed how George Lucas initially took on the Hollywood empire. After writing and directing the first Star Wars film, Lucas nearly had an emotional breakdown and decided to delegate those responsibilities. Even someone as formidable as Lucas struggled against the power of the Hollywood empire.

Unfortunately, the first scriptwriter passed away. Lucas wrote the second draft of the script until a replacement writer could be found. Directing responsibilities were handed over to the unlikely choice of Irvin Kershner, who added phenomenal depth to the characters.

Despite this, Lucas maintained overall creative control over the film. This high-level oversight, combined with the creative collaboration of scriptwriters and a director skilled in character development, resulted in the best of the original trilogy, and one of the finest sequels ever to grace the big screen.

Initially, "The Empire Strikes Back" received mixed reviews. Over time, however, its darker themes and surprising plot twists earned it the reputation as the best film in the Star Wars trilogy. While some of the darkest themes of the Star Wars trilogy are explored in this film, perhaps the darkest of all is hinted at in the name itself, Episode V.

Originally, Star Wars was titled "Adventures of the Starkiller, Episode One: The Star Wars". Somewhere between "Star Wars" and "The Empire Strikes Back," Lucas conceived the idea of three prequels. This suggests the possibility that our hero Lucas, in his fight against the evil hollywood empire, might himself create a new order almost as oppressive as the empire he's trying to overthrow.

Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with the Empire Strikes Back? I mean, you've got Darth Vader, the most powerful guy in the galaxy, and he's got all this high-tech equipment, but he can't seem to catch one young Jedi in training? And how about this Jedi training? You go to a swamp, talk to a little green guy, do some gymnastics, and suddenly you're ready to take on the Empire? And let's not forget the freezing chamber. They freeze Han Solo solid! If my refrigerator did that to my dinner, I'd call the repair guy!
