Inception (2010)

Rating: 8/10
Runtime 148 minutes

"Inception" is a mind-bending movie about people who can craft any dreamscape they choose, in a shared experience with others.

You might think these people would want to create the perfect utopia and disappear from reality. But instead, it seems the primary use of this tool is to steal corporate secrets and embed ideas into others' subconsciousness, which somehow necessitates the most mind-bending dreamscapes to be created on top of each other.

We, the audience, discover the various rules of these dreamscapes as we delve deeper into this world. It is truly a dream within a dream, which adds an additional element of uncertainty in a world where the rules of physics no longer apply.

There is a quote from Zhuangzi which perfectly encapsulates this movie:
“Once upon a time, I dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering here and there. Soon I awoke, and there I was, myself again. But now I don't know if I was a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or if I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man.”

You should not watch Inception if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "Inception"? Is it a movie or a two-hour PhD course in dream psychology? I mean, do we need to hire Sigmund Freud as a translator to understand the plot?

And what's with all the layers? It's like they were baking a lasagna of confusion. First, you're in a dream, then a dream within a dream, then a dream within a dream within a dream... next thing you know, you're dreaming about dreaming about dreaming about taking a nap!

Then there's Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Cobb. The guy's got more baggage than an airport carousel. I mean, am I supposed to feel sorry for him because he can't distinguish dreams from reality? We've all had that problem. It's called Monday morning.
