Brewster's Millions (1985)

Rating: 7/10
Runtime 102 minutes

How can a movie with Richard Pryor and John Candy be this unfunny?

I mean, the movie has one or two chuckles. But none of them come from Richard Pryor or John Candy.

The movie definitely has charm. Richard Pryor is amusing to watch. John Candy is amusing to watch. But they aren't actually laugh-out-loud funny.

It's not like they didn't have any source material. This movie has been remade seven times. This is the seventh remake. Are you telling me that none of the previous seven iterations had any funny jokes in them?

On the whole, this movie is amusing enough to be worth watching, but it should have been so much more.

Trading Places (1983)

This movie is a must-watch if you enjoyed "Brewster's Millions". Similar to Brewster's, there's a sudden shift in financial status and it's road to hilarity. The movie is about a wager between two rich people, who, akin to Brewster's Millions, use others to test their experiment of nature vs. nurture. It's led by a fantastic performance from Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd who perfectly convey the ups and downs of sudden wealth and poverty.

Coming to America (1988)

If you're into comedy films dealing with money and lifestyle changes, "Coming to America" is another Eddie Murphy classic that you should check out. It tells the story of a wealthy African prince who goes to America in search of a woman he can marry. The prince's journey of adapting to a new lifestyle offers plenty of funny moments that could keep you entertained.

The Producers (1967):

"The Producers" is another recommendable film that shares in common the theme of money and elaborate schemes. This story puts together a hapless theatrical producer and an accountant as they plan to get rich through an insidious scheme: deliberately produce a Broadway flop. Garnering critical claim, the movie will surely give you lots of laugh-out-loud moments.

Midnight Run (1988):

While "Midnight Run" is a bit more on the action side compared to "Brewster's Millions," it's still a fun comedy about money, con-men, and it, too, stars Charles Grodin. Robert De Niro's bounty hunter character provides a perfect counterpoint to Grodin's white-collar criminal character. The pair navigate through a country-sprawling adventure with tons of laughs along the way.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988):

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is a hilarious comedic farce with an injection of class envy. It’s about two con men competing to swindle a wealthy heiress out of her money. The amazing comedic performances from Steve Martin and Michael Caine will definitely remind you of the humor found in Brewster's Millions.
