The Covenant (2023)

"A Solid Movie About the War in Afghanistan" is an impeccable portrayal of acting skills. The movie maintains tension throughout, without any unnecessary sermonizing. However, regrettably, this movie just didn't resonate with me.

Directed by Ridley Scott, "Black Hawk Down" is another film that maintains a high level of tension throughout the entire run-time just like "The Covenant". Set during the Battle of Mogadishu, the film narrates the story of 123 elite U.S. soldiers who are dropped into Somalia to capture two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord but find themselves in a desperate battle. The performance of the cast was well received and it is known for the fact that it doesn't put any unwarranted commentary.

Zero Dark Thirty (2012):

"Zero Dark Thirty", directed by Kathryn Bigelow, provides a gripping and realistic depiction of the decade-long manhunt for Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks. Much like "The Covenant", it maintains a continuous state of tension while avoiding unnecessary commentary. Not to mention, Jessica Chastain’s impeccable performance also adds to the film's worth.

Saving Private Ryan (1998):

"Saving Private Ryan" directed by Steven Spielberg, peaks in intensity while keeping the sermonizing to a minimum, much like "The Covenant". The performance of Tom Hanks was highly commended. The film manages to depict the stories of individual soldiers excellently amidst the gruesome realities of war.

Full Metal Jacket (1987):

Finally, if you're looking for another actor-driven war film with strong performances like "The Covenant", then Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" might be right up your alley. It's an intense and largely episodic depiction of the Vietnam War that avoids any superfluous commentary.
