Beau Is Afraid (2023)

Rating: 6/10
Runtime 179 minutes

"Beau Is Afraid" (2023) is a film that demands a particular brand of viewer patience and willingness to dive headfirst into a murky, mysterious narrative. Following the sudden death of his mother, our protagonist, a mild-mannered yet anxiety-ridden man, is catapulted into a confrontation with his deepest, darkest fears. His journey takes him on a surreal, Kafkaesque odyssey back to his hometown and the memories it holds.

The film is an eclectic mix of genres and styles, starting as a dystopian tale reminiscent of a "Mad Max" version of 1970's New York. It then morphs into a theatrical piece in a style similar to "The Grand Budapest Hotel," before finally plunging into a bizarre hybrid of "Bad Taste" and "Heavenly Creatures." If this description leaves you scratching your head, rest assured, the film itself will likely do the same.

The first act of the film leaves the viewer questioning the Beau's sanity. The second act makes you question the director's sanity, while the third act leaves us questioning our sanity... for sitting through this three-hour cinematic rollercoaster.

Is "Beau Is Afraid" worth watching? The film begins with a compelling first hour that lures you into its labyrinth of styles and narrative techniques. If you're the kind of viewer who relishes in the challenge of piecing together a seemingly incoherent pastiche of styles and themes while immersed in the film - and even long after the credits roll - then the answer is a resounding yes.

However, if you seek a clear narrative thread or cohesive thought, this film may not be your cup of tea. It's a wild, dizzying ride that doesn't promise a smooth landing, but for those willing to embrace its madness, "Beau Is Afraid" offers a unique and unforgettable cinematic experience.
