Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Rating: 9/10
Runtime 130 minutes

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" (2014) is an absolute gem of a movie and a fantastic sequel to "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011). The opportunity for peace between apes and humans is precariously balanced, threatened by a potent mix of mistrust and betrayal. This tension threatens to plunge both tribes into an all-out war for dominance over the earth.

From the get-go, the film does an outstanding job of setting the stage for the apes' world. The opening 10-15 minutes is a masterclass in visual storytelling, establishing the apes' world with minimal dialogue.

The plot of the movie unfolds like a Shakespearean tragedy, replete with power struggles, betrayal, and heartbreak. The character of Koba is unforgettable, standing out as one of the best villains in recent memory. His cunning and ruthlessness add a chilling layer of tension to the narrative.

The cinematography of the film is nothing short of jaw-dropping. Every scene is a visual treat. The ingenious use of technology to give depth to the apes' facial expressions is remarkable and pushes the boundaries of what is possible in filmmaking.

To top it all off, we have a stellar performance by Gary Oldman. Does the man ever deliver a bad performance?

As the movie progresses, we find that while apes are not without their flaws or their tragedies, they also express a noble dignity. It is the apes who are the stars of the movie. And as the pace of the action increases, we find ourselves caring more for the apes than we do for most of the human survivors.
