Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

This family puts the fun in dysfunctional.

Rating: 10/10
Runtime 101 minutes

"Little Miss Sunshine" (2006) is a darkly comedic journey of a deeply dysfunctional family, hurtling across the country in their rickety VW bus for the sole purpose of entering their youngest member into a beauty pageant - a pageant that, frankly, none of them believe she can win.

This film is a rollercoaster ride of misery, strife and familial tension, amplified by the claustrophobic confines of their travelling home. Each character is wrapped in their own sphere of unhappiness, their own private Idaho of personal failure and discontent, making them all the more miserable together.

However, as the narrative progresses, something beautiful happens. Amidst the chaos, the arguing, the emotional turmoil, this family begins to come together. The adversity they face, the obstacles in their path, they overcome it all for the sake of the youngest member of their clan. From the onset, the odds of her winning the beauty pageant seem slim, but that's not the point. The point is that they tried, they pulled together, they did it for her.

And let's not forget the biting commentary on the beauty pageants themselves. "Little Miss Sunshine" does not shy away from highlighting how utterly bizarre these competitions are, especially for young, pre-pubescent girls. The film casts a harsh, unflinching light on the often grotesque nature of these pageants, laying bare the absurdity of it all.

Yet, somehow, amidst this biting satire and familial discord, the film injects a sense of comradery into the family. And we, as an audience, come to care for this family, want them to succeed, want them to find some semblance of happiness.

"Little Miss Sunshine" is a film that will make you laugh, make you cringe, make you question, and most importantly, make you feel. It's a masterful blend of dark comedy and heartfelt emotion, a film that does not sugarcoat the realities of life but also celebrates the beauty of coming together as a family, no matter how broken that family may be.

You should not watch Little Miss Sunshine if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "Little Miss Sunshine?"I mean, here we have a family that can't get along to save their lives, but put them in a yellow VW bus with a faulty clutch, and suddenly they're the Brady Bunch on wheels!

And let's talk about this beauty pageant. These kids are wearing more makeup than a department store counter. You ever notice that? They're nine years old and they're contouring. When I was nine, I was playing with dirt and couldn't even color within the lines.

Then there's grandpa, played by Alan Arkin. The man's snorting heroin, but he's the life coach of the family! What's up with that? And let's not forget Dwayne. The teenager who's taken a vow of silence. A silent teenager? Now there's a concept!

But you know what? Despite the breakdowns, both mechanical and mental, they stick together. They push that bus up hills, they run alongside it, they even perform an impromptu dance routine. The put the fun in dysfunctional.
